Alton Terrell Monroe Sentenced in Mississippi Cocaine Ring

A 44-year-old Canton man has been slammed with a 75-month federal prison sentence for his role in a massive cocaine trafficking operation that flooded central Mississippi with drugs and cash. Alton Terrell Monroe pleaded guilty on July 30, 2021, to possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, marking the end of a years-long investigation into a tightly woven drug network.

The takedown traces back to a sweeping 2017 probe led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which zeroed in on high-level traffickers moving kilos of cocaine through the region. That investigation ultimately resulted in the seizure of approximately $585,000 in illicit proceeds and 12 kilograms of cocaine—enough to fuel hundreds of thousands of hits on the street.

Monroe, a resident of Canton, Mississippi, was identified as one of the key players in the distribution chain. While court records do not detail his exact role, the charge of possession with intent to distribute at that weight threshold indicates he was no low-level dealer, but rather a central figure in the operation.

The case was built through a multi-agency dragnet involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the U.S. Marshals Service; the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office; the Jackson Police Department; the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics; and the Internal Revenue Service. The financial arm of the probe, led by IRS agents, helped unravel the money trail behind the drug ring.

Prosecutors Keesha Middleton and Chris Wansley of the U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the case as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF)—a federal initiative designed to dismantle the highest-level criminal networks using intelligence-led, multi-jurisdictional strategies. OCDETF’s involvement signals the severity and reach of the trafficking ring.

U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca and DEA Special Agent in Charge Brad L. Byerley confirmed the sentencing, underscoring the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on drug traffickers in the region. For Alton Terrell Monroe, the cost of his criminal enterprise is now 75 months behind bars—and a permanent felony record in one of Mississippi’s most aggressive drug enforcement actions in recent years.
