LITTLE ROCK—Kamron Leemonte Mathis, 27, of North Little Rock, won’t be leaving federal prison anytime soon. Mathis, a multi-convicted felon, was sentenced to 188 months in the Bureau of Prisons for illegally possessing a firearm.
Jonathan D. Ross, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, announced the sentence, which was handed down today by United States District Judge James M. Moody, Jr. Mathis pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm on October 11, 2023.
Mathis, who was on parole at the time of the traffic stop, was driving a vehicle on June 25, 2022, with expired registration. North Little Rock Police Department officers stopped the vehicle and found a 9 mm firearm under the driver’s seat, along with two magazines and approximately 24 rounds of ammunition.
Mathis has a prior conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, as well as prior convictions for robbery on two different occasions, two counts of aggravated assault, and battery in the first degree. His sentence was based on the offense as well as his documented violent criminal history.
With a maximum penalty of not less than 15 years to life in prison and a fine of $250,000, Mathis’ 188-month sentence was a serious blow. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Mathis will have to serve his full sentence.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the North Little Rock Police Department. Mathis will be followed by five years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
The sentence sends a clear message: repeat offenders will be held accountable for their actions. Mathis’ case serves as a reminder to the public that illegally possessing a firearm comes with severe consequences.
