Arlington Man Pleads Guilty to Downloading 83K Child Porn Images

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — James Jeffrey Schroeder, 50, of Arlington, has admitted to one of the most extensive child pornography collections uncovered in recent federal investigations. The former teacher’s assistant at Sharyland High School in Mission, Texas, pleaded guilty today to charges of receiving and downloading child pornography, following a forensic sweep of his digital devices.

According to the statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, Schroeder engaged in the systematic acquisition of child sexual abuse material from approximately 1997 to August 2015. Much of the material was obtained directly from the internet — and, in a disturbing twist, shared by a family member. The depth and duration of the operation suggest long-term, deliberate exploitation of the most vulnerable victims.

Forensic examiners uncovered a digital archive of horror: more than 83,000 images and 400 videos of child pornography. Among the files were depictions of extreme violence, with many images classified as sadistic or masochistic in nature. The material included scenes of physical abuse, bondage, and other forms of torture inflicted on children — evidence that prosecutors say reflects not just a crime of possession, but of complicity in ongoing abuse.

Schroeder now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for February 2, 2017, before U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis, III. While the statutory maximum is set by Congress, actual sentencing will be determined by the court using advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors, including the heinous nature of the material and the span of criminal conduct.

The case was announced by Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Clark E. Settles, Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Whitney Dougherty Russell, who emphasized the federal commitment to dismantling networks of child exploitation.

Documents related to the case, including the plea agreement and forensic findings, are available through the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, as well as the District Court’s public docket under Case No. 1:16-cr-242 via PACER. The investigation underscores the reach of federal cybercrime units in tracking down predators who operate in the darkest corners of the digital world.
