Army Soldier Gets Life for Torture-Murder of Daughter

HONOLULU, HI – Naeem Williams, 34, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the horrific murder of his five-year-old daughter, Talia Williams. The sentence was handed down today by U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright in Honolulu, bringing a grim conclusion to a case that exposed a pattern of sickening abuse.

The federal jury found Williams guilty on June 27, 2014, of brutally beating Talia to death at their residence on Wheeler Army Airfield. But the verdict went beyond a single act of violence. The jury also convicted Williams of participating with his wife, Delilah Williams, in a years-long campaign of torture and assault against the child, stretching from December 2004 until July 16, 2005 – the day Talia died.

Evidence presented during the trial painted a disturbing picture of daily brutality. Williams and his wife subjected Talia to relentless physical abuse, allegedly as “discipline” for bathroom accidents, and fueled by marital frustrations. The horrors included repeated punchings, forced consumption of feces, starvation, grueling exercises followed by beatings, and the barbaric act of binding Talia to a bedpost for whippings with a belt. The final moments of her life were particularly gruesome; Williams struck Talia, causing her head to slam into the floor, followed by what appeared to be a seizure.

Williams attempted to cover up his crimes, obstructing justice and lying to Army Criminal Investigation Division agents on the night of his arrest in July 2005. But the evidence, painstakingly gathered by the FBI and the Army Criminal Investigation Division, proved damning. His own testimony, attempting to justify the abuse, only served to underscore the depravity of his actions.

Delilah Williams, facing the same accusations, pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and agreed to testify against her husband. She received a 20-year prison sentence for her role in the torture and death of their daughter. While her cooperation secured a lesser sentence, it doesn’t diminish the monstrous nature of their shared crimes.

The prosecution team, led by Trial Attorney Steven D. Mellin of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division’s Capital Case Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren W.K. Ching of the District of Hawaii, secured a just outcome in a case that will undoubtedly haunt the halls of justice for years to come. The life sentence handed down to Naeem Williams serves as a stark reminder that such barbarity will not be tolerated, and those who inflict such pain on the most vulnerable among us will be held accountable.
