BB&T VP Pilfers Bank Vaults, Faces Decades in Prison

ABINGDON, VA – A former BB&T executive traded trust for theft, admitting today to systematically pilfering cash from bank vaults across Southwest Virginia. Melissa D. Huffman, 46, of Roanoke, pled guilty to a one-count Information charging embezzlement from an FDIC-insured bank in United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

Huffman, a former senior vice-president and regional branch operations manager, didn’t need a gun or a mask. Her position *was* the weapon. Between 2014 and December 2016, she leveraged her access to BB&T vaults – from Boonsboro to Warrenton – to line her pockets. The scheme wasn’t a one-time grab; it was a calculated, ongoing theft. And when the cash came up short, Huffman allegedly pinned the blame on her subordinates.

Acting United States Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle didn’t mince words. Huffman waived her right to an indictment and entered the guilty plea before Judge James P. Jones. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. The feds aren’t playing around – Huffman faces a maximum possible sentence of up to 30 years behind bars and a staggering $1,000,000 fine.

The branches hit by Huffman’s greed included locations in Boonsboro, Fort Hill, Martinsville, Tanglewood, Tazewell, and Warrenton. The full extent of the stolen funds remains unclear, but Huffman has already agreed to make full restitution. She’s paid over $30,000 towards that restitution as of May 24, 2017 – a drop in the bucket compared to the potential penalties she’s facing.

The United States Secret Service led the investigation, meticulously piecing together the evidence of Huffman’s betrayal. Assistant United States Attorney Randy Ramseyer is handling the prosecution, determined to see justice served for the bank and its employees who were potentially victimized by Huffman’s actions.

This case serves as a stark reminder that even those in positions of power aren’t above the law. Huffman’s calculated theft wasn’t just a financial crime; it was a breach of trust that will likely cost her years of her life. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves towards sentencing and beyond, bringing you the unvarnished truth about crime in the federal system.
