“Bearded Bandit” Ellis Gets 45 Months for Bank Heists

OAKLAND — Kenneth Michael Ellis, the so-called “Bearded Bandit,” has been sentenced to 45 months in federal prison for a string of eight unarmed bank robberies that terrorized branches across Northern California. The 31-year-old from Stockton pleaded guilty on November 16, 2016, to charges that spanned multiple jurisdictions, leaving a trail of fear and stolen cash in his wake.

Ellis admitted to hitting banks in Fremont, Gilroy, Concord, Dublin, Pleasanton, and Lafayette using the same cold, calculated routine: dark glasses, a hat pulled low, and a handwritten note demanding cash while warning tellers not to sound alarms or take action. No weapons were used, but the threat was clear. In less than two months, Ellis stole more than $28,000, striking with precision and vanishing before law enforcement could lock in a pattern.

The robbery spree began on February 12, 2016, when Ellis took $3,000 from a Chase Bank in Fremont. He escalated quickly — $4,400 from Wells Fargo in Gilroy on March 4, $3,180 from another Wells Fargo in Concord on March 11, and $1,700 from US Bank in Dublin on March 15. By March 17, he hit two banks in a single day — $1,434 from US Bank in Fremont and $5,145 from Wells Fargo in Pleasanton. The final confirmed robbery was $4,600 from a Chase Bank in Lafayette on March 21.

Ellis also admitted to three additional heists in the Eastern District of California: $1,000 from Chase Bank in Elk Grove, $1,400 from Wells Fargo in Sacramento, and $1,500 from Bank of Stockton in Rio Vista — all within days of each other. These raids sealed his fate, triggering a multi-agency manhunt that painted him as a mobile threat across state lines.

The hammer came down when a citizen flagged Ellis to Brentwood police on March 23, 2016. He was arrested on the spot, ending the spree. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers handed down the 45-month sentence and added a three-year period of supervised release. Ellis, who has been in custody since his arrest, will serve the sentence immediately.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina McCall, with support from Vanessa Quant, Melissa Dorton, and Noble Hughes. The investigation involved a massive coalition: the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern and Northern Districts of California, multiple county district attorneys, and no fewer than 13 local law enforcement agencies — from Elk Grove to Dixon, from Alameda County to Sacramento. The coordinated takedown of Kenneth Michael Ellis proves that even the most mobile bandit can’t outrun a determined net.
