Bellinger Sentenced to Life for Prison Murder

Prison Violence

In a brutal display of prison violence, Kevin Marquette Bellinger, a former Washington, D.C. resident, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of fellow inmate Jesse Harris. The heinous crime took place on October 7, 2007, at the United States Penitentiary in Hazelton, West Virginia.

Bellinger, who was serving a life sentence for an assault with intent to kill that occurred in 2000, was convicted by a federal jury on June 16, 2014, of one count of murder by a federal prisoner serving a life sentence and one count of second degree murder in a federal facility.

According to evidence presented at trial, during a move of inmates from the recreation yard back to their cells, Bellinger and a co-defendant left the yard ahead of the others and traveled to an intersection of two corridors in the prison facility, where they confronted Harris and stabbed him with shanks in an orchestrated attack. Surveillance footage of the attack showed Bellinger and his co-defendant engaged in a verbal exchange with Harris, followed by the two attackers wielding weapons and assaulting Harris, who was unarmed and backing away from them.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II, for the Northern District of West Virginia, made the announcement after sentencing by U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley of the Northern District of West Virginia. The investigation was led by the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, with the case being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Richard Burns from the Criminal Division’s Capital Case Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon Flower of the Northern District of West Virginia.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the brutal reality of life behind bars. Prison violence is a persistent problem that affects not only the inmates, but also the correctional officers who work tirelessly to maintain order and safety within the walls of these facilities.

Bellinger’s sentence is a testament to the determination of law enforcement and prosecutors to hold accountable those who commit heinous crimes within our prison system. As we continue to grapple with the complexities of prison reform, it is essential that we prioritize the safety and well-being of both inmates and correctional officers.

This case is a stark reminder that no one is above the law, not even those who are serving time behind bars. Kevin Marquette Bellinger will now spend the rest of his life in prison, a fate that could have been avoided had he not committed this heinous crime.
