Rebel forces, led by the infamous General Guadalupe Sanchez, launched a surprise attack on the town at 11 pm, catching the federal garrison of 200 men, led by General Berlanga, off guard. The battle raged on through the night, with reinforcements ordered to aid Berlanga by 7 am the following morning.
