Body-Camera Footage Unveiled in Mark Bemis Death Probe

New York Attorney General Letitia James has released graphic body-worn camera footage from the investigation into the tragic death of Mark Bemis, who was killed on June 18 following an incident with Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies.

The video, obtained as part of the ongoing inquiry, shows CCSO officers responding to a domestic disturbance call at Mina. Mr. Bemis, armed with a long gun, exchanged fire with the officers before being struck and killed. A shotgun was recovered from the scene.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is tasked with assessing every incident reported to it where a police or peace officer may have caused a death by act or omission. The OSI’s findings will determine whether a full investigation into this matter proceeds.

Attorney General James has directed that all camera footage obtained during an OSI investigation be released to the public, aiming to enhance transparency and public trust in such matters. However, it should be noted that the release of this footage does not imply any opinion on the guilt or innocence of any party involved in a criminal matter.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is currently under review for its handling of the incident, with many community members and legal experts awaiting the outcome of the investigation. The public’s interest in the case remains high as details of this tragic encounter continue to unfold.
