Alen Zheng, a 20-year-old from Land O’Lakes, attempted to detonate an improvised explosive device at the MacDill Air Force Base Visitor’s Center in Tampa on the evening of March 10, 2026. Luckily, the device failed to explode, and law enforcement was able to safely disassemble it. The motive behind the attempted bombing is still unclear. Zheng now faces serious charges, including attempted damage of government property by fire or explosion.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force investigated the case, which will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Lauren Stoia and David P. Sullivan. If convicted, Zheng could spend between 5 and 40 years in federal prison.
The indictment against Zheng includes charges of unlawful making of a destructive device and possession of an unregistered destructive device. These charges are a testament to the severity of the crime and the potential danger it posed to the people at the air force base.
The foiled bomb plot has raised concerns about security at the base and the effectiveness of measures in place to prevent such incidents. As the case moves forward, more information may come to light about the events leading up to the attempted bombing and the investigation that followed.
