December 16, 1927, will be remembered as a night of reckoning for the notorious bootleggers that have plagued Hot Springs County, Wyoming. Under the cover of darkness, State and Federal officers, in cooperation with Sheriff’s deputies, descended upon several alleged speakeasies, making off with six suspects in the dead of night. C.C. Swain, Wm. R. Alaux, J.F. Newcomb, Eugene Miller, John Milton, and Ella Edwards were all hauled away, accused of violating the federal liquor laws.
The arrests were made after a lengthy investigation by authorities, who had been monitoring the activities of these suspected bootleggers for some time. According to sources, the suspects were taken into custody at various locations in Hot Springs County, where they were found to be in possession of large quantities of illicit liquor.
The six defendants were subsequently arraigned before U.S. Commissioner J.A. Thompson, who released them on bond to appear in Federal court in Cheyenne at its next term. While this may seem like a lenient treatment, authorities are confident that they have finally put the brakes on the bootlegging operation that has been terrorizing Hot Springs County.
Meanwhile, in Mexico City, a different kind of hero was making headlines. Charles A. Lindbergh, the celebrated aviator, successfully completed a non-stop flight from Washington, D.C. to Mexico City, landing at 2:30 P.M. after 27 hours and 10 minutes in the air. Lindbergh’s remarkable feat was met with jubilation, as President Calles and Ambassador Morrow greeted him at the field, surrounded by a crowd of over 30,000 spectators.
As the people of Hot Springs County look to a brighter future, free from the grip of bootlegging, one thing is certain: the law will no longer be ignored. Jimmy Allen’s Old Style dance, advertised for the Odd Fellows Hall, may provide a welcome distraction from the troubles of the past, but for now, the focus remains on bringing justice to those who have broken the law.
