OKREEK, SD – Paris James Bordeaux, 27, of Mission, South Dakota, is headed to federal lockup after pleading guilty to Simple Assault. The conviction stems from a brutal domestic incident last summer, bringing a swift, if delayed, reckoning for Bordeaux’s actions.
According to court documents, officers with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services responded to a disturbing call on July 24, 2016. The call originated from a residence in Okreek, Todd County, reporting active domestic abuse. Upon arrival, authorities found evidence of an assault and identified Bordeaux as the perpetrator.
Bordeaux admitted to assaulting his intimate partner. The details of the assault remain shielded from public view, but the severity was enough to warrant federal charges and, ultimately, a custodial sentence. U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno handed down the sentence on March 15, 2017, a full eight months after the initial incident.
The sentence includes six months in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, a $10 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and a 90-day window for restitution to be determined. Crucially, the conviction will be recorded as a domestic violence offense, impacting Bordeaux’s future and potentially triggering harsher penalties for any subsequent offenses.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carrie G. Sanderson and Jeremy R. Jehangiri successfully prosecuted the case, building upon the thorough investigation conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Bordeaux has been ordered to self-surrender to the U.S. Marshals Service on April 18, 2017, marking the official start of his sentence.
This case serves as a stark reminder that domestic violence is a serious federal crime, even within tribal jurisdictions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this and other cases as they move through the federal system, holding offenders accountable and shining a light on the often-hidden world of violent crime.
