BOSTON – Another gun-toting ex-con hitting the streets of Boston. Tyrone Goforth, 40, is facing federal charges after being caught with a loaded semi-automatic pistol, authorities announced yesterday. This isn’t just a paperwork violation; it’s a clear danger to the public, and Grimy Times is tracking it closely.
Goforth has been charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, stemming from an incident on July 31, 2020. According to court documents, the man was found to be carrying a black Sig Sauer P938 9mm pistol, complete with five rounds of 9mm ammunition. A prior conviction already stripped Goforth of his right to own a firearm, and he has no federal license to legally possess one.
The bust came after investigators connected Goforth to the weapon. The details of how he came to possess the gun remain tight-lipped, but the fact is simple: a convicted felon had a loaded firearm. This isn’t about Second Amendment rights; it’s about keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of those legally barred from having them. After an initial court appearance, Goforth was handed back to state custody, but the federal charges loom large.
If convicted, Goforth could face up to 10 years behind bars, along with three years of supervised release and a hefty $250,000 fine. However, sentencing is ultimately at the discretion of the federal district court judge, who will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors. Expect a fight – and Grimy Times will be there to cover every angle.
U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, alongside Kelly D. Brady, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner William Gross, jointly announced the charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Dawley, from Lelling’s Organized Crime and Gang Unit, is spearheading the prosecution. This case isn’t happening in a vacuum.
This operation is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at uniting law enforcement at all levels with local communities to tackle violent crime. Revamped in 2017, PSN focuses on targeting violent offenders and fostering partnerships to create safer neighborhoods. But let’s be clear: initiatives are only as good as the work on the ground. And right now, that work means holding Tyrone Goforth accountable. It’s important to remember that the details in the complaint are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
