Brandon Brown, 45, of Monticello, Iowa, walked into the F&M Bank on July 29, 2016, and walked out with more than $4,000 — and a federal indictment. Today, he admitted his guilt in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, confessing to one of the most brazen crimes the quiet town has seen in years.
Brown pled guilty to armed bank robbery, admitting in court documents that he brandished a weapon and pointed it directly at a bank employee during the heist. There was no warning, no note — just a firearm in hand and a demand for cash. Surveillance footage from that morning shows him striding to the counter, making threats, and stuffing stacks of bills into a bag before fleeing on foot.
The FBI moved fast. Within days, agents had identified Brown as the suspect. Evidence, including physical descriptions, location data, and forensic analysis, painted an inescapable picture. Brown was arrested and has remained in custody ever since, held without bond by the United States Marshal as the case moved toward resolution.
No one was physically injured during the robbery, but prosecutors emphasized the psychological toll on the bank staff. ‘This wasn’t a victimless crime,’ said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Schunk, who is handling the prosecution. ‘A gun pointed at someone’s face leaves scars no prison sentence can erase.’
Sentencing is pending. Chief U.S. District Judge Linda R. Reade will determine Brown’s fate after a presentence report is completed. He faces a maximum of 25 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and up to five years of supervised release if ever freed.
The case, filed as 16-CR-080-LRR, is another reminder that federal eyes are always watching — even in small-town Iowa. Court records are available through the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
