Stan Johnson, 23, of the Bronx, New York, is facing federal charges after allegedly scaling a perimeter fence, sneaking into an unoccupied aircraft, and wandering through the terminal at Albany International Airport on May 24, 2021. The brazen breach bypassed critical security zones, triggering a multi-agency response and raising urgent questions about airport safety protocols.
Johnson was arraigned today in Albany before United States Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart, where he was formally charged via federal indictment. He has been ordered held without bail pending trial, as authorities assess the full scope of his actions and potential motives behind the intrusion.
The indictment accuses Johnson of unlawful entry onto restricted airport grounds, a federal offense that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to 3 years of supervised release. Though no weapons or explosives were reported found on his person, the incident activated the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force due to the sensitivity of aviation security.
United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Janeen DiGuiseppi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albany Field Office, confirmed the charges. They emphasized that while the breach did not disrupt flights, any unauthorized access to secure airport infrastructure is treated with the highest level of seriousness.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing and being led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping is prosecuting the case, building on surveillance footage, access logs, and witness statements gathered during the initial response.
The charges against Johnson are merely accusations. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Still, the case has ignited scrutiny over perimeter defenses at regional airports, with lawmakers demanding answers on how someone managed to penetrate such a tightly regulated zone undetected.
