Bronx Man Gets 51 Months for Heroin Run

A 44-year-old Bronx man was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for hauling 15 kilograms of heroin across state lines as part of a cross-country drug ring, federal prosecutors announced today. Dany Francisco-Valerio moved the deadly cargo on Christmas Eve 2014, hiding it in a secret compartment of his vehicle before being intercepted in Warren County, New Jersey.

Francisco-Valerio pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin, admitting his role in a broader trafficking network that moved multi-kilo shipments across the U.S. The bust, led by DEA and New Jersey State Police, cut off a major supply chain tied to organized distribution operations. U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan handed down the sentence in Trenton federal court.

On December 24, 2014, Francisco-Valerio was arrested while transporting the narcotics, which were stashed in a concealed compartment engineered into his vehicle. The seizure marked one of the larger single-haul heroin intercepts in the region that year. Authorities say the drug was likely destined for urban street markets, where it could have fueled thousands of doses.

His co-conspirator, Vionel Rondon Cortorreal, has also pleaded guilty before Judge Sheridan and awaits sentencing. Investigators say the two men were middlemen in a larger trafficking pipeline stretching from production hubs to East Coast distribution zones. Both were tracked through surveillance and interdiction efforts coordinated by federal and state law enforcement.

In addition to prison time, Judge Sheridan sentenced Francisco-Valerio to three years of supervised release upon his eventual return to society. The court emphasized the danger posed by large-scale heroin operations, particularly amid the national opioid crisis, calling the crime a direct threat to public health and safety.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Jersey Division, under Special Agent in Charge Valerie A. Nickerson, and the New Jersey State Police, led by Acting Superintendent Col. Patrick J. Callahan. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas S. Kearney and Jamari Buxton of the OC/Gangs Unit in Newark. Francisco-Valerio was represented by defense attorney John D. Lynch of Jersey City, New Jersey.
