Bullhead Woman Indicted in Heinous Child Abuse Case

BULLHEAD, SD – Alyssa Oka, 27, of Bullhead, South Dakota, stands accused of inflicting appalling abuse upon four young victims, all under the age of seven. A federal grand jury returned an indictment on February 15, 2017, detailing multiple instances of alleged cruelty. The charges are a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk behind closed doors, even in seemingly quiet communities.

United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the indictment, which includes four counts of Child Abuse. The indictment alleges that Oka abused, exposed, tortured, tormented, and cruelly punished the children on multiple dates. The specifics of the alleged abuse have not been publicly released, but the charges paint a grim picture of sustained and deliberate harm.

Oka appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on February 21, 2017, and entered a plea of not guilty. She is currently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting a trial date that has yet to be set. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, is leading the investigation, highlighting the vulnerability of children within tribal communities.

If convicted on all counts, Oka faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence – up to 15 years in custody per count – and a substantial financial penalty of up to $250,000. In addition to imprisonment and fines, the court could impose three years of supervised release per count, and require Oka to pay up to $400 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution to the victims may also be ordered.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case, tasked with building a compelling case against Oka and securing justice for the alleged victims. While the indictment represents a significant step forward, it’s crucial to remember that these are merely accusations at this stage.

Oka is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the gravity of the charges and the alleged suffering of the victims underscore the importance of a thorough and impartial legal process. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
