A 34-year-old California man is behind bars after being sentenced to 144 months imprisonment for violating the federal Controlled Substances Act.
Walter Alvarez Tirado, a resident of Chula Vista, California, was handed down the sentence on May 21, 2024, along with 5 years of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
Tirado pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, a charge that carries severe penalties under Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(A).
According to court documents, on October 6, 2021, Tirado traveled from Kentucky to New Orleans to deliver a whopping 50 pounds of methamphetamine. Law enforcement conducted a traffic stop of Tirado’s vehicle in Pearl River, Louisiana. Following the stop, officers searched Tirado’s luggage and discovered the massive stash of methamphetamine.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Louisiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney J. Benjamin Myers of the Financial Crimes Unit handled the prosecution.
Tirado’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of the federal government’s stance on methamphetamine trafficking. As the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities across the country, the importance of holding individuals accountable for their roles in fueling the crisis cannot be overstated.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized the significance of this case, stating, ‘The sentence imposed today reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions.’
Tirado’s 144-month sentence is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors working together to disrupt and dismantle methamphetamine trafficking operations.
