California Woman Gets 32 Months for Anti-Semitic Threats

A California woman has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for making anti-Semitic phone threats to a former executive director of Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue.

Melanie Harris, 59, of Riverside, California, pleaded guilty to knowingly and intentionally transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Harris made multiple calls to the victim’s cell phone, leaving four separate threatening voicemails on October 3, 2022, with the intent to communicate a true threat and with the knowledge that the communications would be seen as true threats, prosecutors said.

One of the voicemails contained the anti-Semitic slur ‘kike,’ which Harris used to threaten the victim and his family, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said Harris’ four-year campaign of harassment and threats targeted three victims, including the former executive director and his family, who were closely associated with the Tree of Life Synagogue.

Harris’ actions were described as ‘hate-filled’ and ‘abhorrent’ by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe, who vowed to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who threaten the safety and security of the South Florida community.

The FBI’s Miami Field Office also weighed in on the case, stating that violence through words or actions is unacceptable and that the agency will continue to do everything it can to identify, arrest, and bring to justice those who engage in similar conduct.

Harris’ sentencing hearing was held in Miami, Florida, where U.S. District Judge Roy K. Altman imposed the 32-month prison sentence, to be followed by three years of supervised release.

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of hate crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions, according to law enforcement officials.

Harris’ actions have been condemned by all who value tolerance and respect for all members of society, regardless of their faith or background.
