Cedar Rapids Man Bordman Charged in Child Porn Case

Michael Bordman, 22, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is facing federal charges tied to the sexual exploitation of a child and the distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography. The indictment, unsealed October 7, 2016, in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, lays bare a pattern of predatory behavior stretching from August 2015 to July 2016.

The charges stem from allegations that Bordman not only produced illicit material involving a minor but also actively circulated it. Federal prosecutors say the evidence points to a deliberate and ongoing effort to exploit a child for sexual purposes and to share the resulting material across digital channels. The indictment does not specify the victim’s identity or exact circumstances of the exploitation.

If convicted, Bordman faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and up to 90 years behind bars. Additional penalties include a $1,000,000 fine, a $400 special assessment, and a supervised release term of at least five years—potentially lasting the rest of his life. Such sentences reflect the severity with which federal courts treat crimes involving child sexual exploitation.

Bordman appeared in federal court for a detention hearing on October 11, 2016, where he was ordered held without bond. With a trial scheduled for December 12, 2016, authorities are moving swiftly to bring the case to resolution. The decision to detain him pretrial signals the court’s assessment of both flight risk and danger to the community.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and investigated by a joint task force including the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations. The collaboration underscores the multi-agency effort often required to dismantle networks of child exploitation.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the surge in online child sexual abuse. The program coordinates federal, state, and local resources to identify, rescue, and protect child victims while aggressively pursuing those who produce and distribute child pornography. Court records are available under case number CR 16-81 via the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system.
