Cedar Rapids Man Jailed for Assaulting Federal Marshal

A Cedar Rapids man who violently resisted arrest and assaulted a federal law enforcement officer has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. Nicholas Stephen Corporon, 40, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, admitted to physically attacking a United States Marshal Service Task Force officer during a confrontation that left the agent injured.

On August 28, 2017, Corporon pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal employee, acknowledging in court documents that he knowingly and forcibly resisted when the officer attempted to place him in handcuffs. The incident unfolded as agents moved to arrest Corporon, at which point he refused to comply, broke free, and fled on foot. A brief but intense chase followed.

After catching up to Corporon, the officer again attempted to secure him with restraints. Corporon fought back, struggling violently and prolonging the physical confrontation. The struggle resulted in documented injuries to the federal agent, underscoring the danger posed during what should have been a routine apprehension.

On February 15, 2018, U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids. Corporon was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison, ordered to pay a $100 special assessment, and mandated to repay $97,936.42 in restitution to the injured officer. The sum reflects medical costs and lost wages tied to the assault.

In addition to prison time, Corporon must serve a three-year term of supervised release upon his release. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning he must serve at least 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for release. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to a federal correctional facility.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa C. Williams. Court records, including the full docket in case number 17-cr-0049, are available through the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system.
