CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – William Meyer, 65, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will spend the next three decades in federal prison after being sentenced today for the horrific sexual exploitation of children in the Philippines. The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams, marks the culmination of a case that exposed a dark underbelly of international predation.
Meyer pleaded guilty on February 4, 2020, to one count of sexual exploitation of children. Court documents reveal that between 2012 and 2019, Meyer actively persuaded, induced, and enticed minors into engaging in sexually explicit conduct, all for the purpose of creating and transmitting visual depictions of the abuse. The predator leveraged trips to the Philippines ostensibly for charitable work as cover for his vile activities.
The sentencing hearing painted a chilling picture of Meyer’s crimes. Evidence showed he transmitted live, sexually explicit Skype video transmissions involving at least six children in the Philippines, including three girls who had not yet reached puberty. The sheer scale of the exploitation, facilitated by modern technology, is a stark reminder of the dangers facing vulnerable children globally.
Judge Williams sentenced Meyer to 360 months’ imprisonment – 30 years – and imposed a hefty $50,000 fine. In addition to the prison term, Meyer will be subject to $5,100 in special assessments and a five-year term of supervised release upon his eventual release. Crucially, he will be required to comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements, ensuring the community is aware of his dangerous history.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, brought this predator to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring accountability for Meyer’s heinous actions. This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice dedicated to combating the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood marshals resources at the federal, state, and local levels to identify, rescue, and prosecute those who prey on children.
