Gregory Gibson, 33, of Chalmette, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison after admitting to flooding the streets with hundreds of grams of heroin. The hard-fought conviction caps a long-running investigation into a local drug network that authorities say preyed on vulnerable communities.
Gibson was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk to 42 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. He must also pay a $100 special assessment. The sentence comes after Gibson pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of heroin, a charge carrying serious federal penalties.
Court documents reveal Gibson distributed heroin on or about October 8, 2013. More damning, he admitted to trafficking between 400 and 700 grams of the deadly opioid—a quantity that marks this not as casual dealing, but as sustained distribution tied to larger supply chains.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, federal bulldogs known for dismantling entrenched drug operations. Their work uncovered communications, transaction records, and witness testimony that sealed Gibson’s fate long before the plea deal.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, Eastern District of Louisiana, commended the agencies for their relentless pursuit of justice. “This sentence sends a message: those who profit from addiction will face federal time,” Polite stated. “Our communities are safer today because of this prosecution.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Haller handled the case for the government, methodically building the evidence that left Gibson no choice but to plead. With heroin still ravaging towns across the Gulf Coast, this conviction is one strike in a broader battle—one that’s far from over.
