FRESNO, Calif. — In a shocking display of disregard for the law, 40-year-old Evan Moore, a convicted felon from Chowchilla, was sentenced yesterday to 34 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
According to court documents, on December 18, 2022, Madera Police officers stopped Moore after observing several traffic violations. Moore was found to be in possession of 1.24 pounds of marijuana, a digital scale, and zip-loc baggies. But what’s even more alarming is that hidden underneath the steering column, officers located a Glock 19 handgun. This is a clear indication of Moore’s intent to continue his life of crime, despite having two prior convictions for illegally possessing firearms.
Moore’s criminal record is a long one, with two prior convictions for illegally possessing firearms. This makes him a prime example of someone who poses a significant threat to public safety. By possessing a firearm, Moore was putting himself and others at risk of serious harm or even death.
This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Madera Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Antonio J. Pataca prosecuted the case.
Moore’s sentence is a direct result of the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to reduce violent crime and gun violence in our communities. As part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve, Moore’s case is a prime example of the success of this initiative.
The U.S. Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy in 2021, strengthening PSN based on core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Moore’s sentence is a stark reminder that our law enforcement agencies will not tolerate anyone who disregards the law and puts others at risk. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
