Cleveland Men Indicted in 3-Pound Fentanyl Bust

More than three pounds of fentanyl—enough to kill hundreds of thousands—were shipped from Las Vegas to a Cleveland home, landing Edward Jewell, 29, and Muhammad Salett, 25, in federal crosshairs. A grand jury has indicted both men on one count of possession with intent to distribute the deadly synthetic opioid, according to U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon.

The 2991 grams of fentanyl were intercepted after being mailed to a residence on East 53rd Street in Cleveland. Court documents reveal the package was flagged during a joint operation targeting high-risk postal shipments. The delivery date was January 13, the same day law enforcement moved in to seize the drugs and initiate the investigation.

Jewell, also known as Rayshawn Williams, and Salett now face federal prosecution in what authorities call a significant disruption of a long-distance drug pipeline. The case underscores how traffickers exploit the U.S. mail system to move massive quantities of illicit narcotics across state lines.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Seabury Gould is handling the prosecution following a coordinated probe by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Cleveland Division of Police, and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators say the packaging, routing, and recipient history raised immediate red flags during routine surveillance of suspect parcels.

If convicted, the court will determine sentencing based on federal guidelines, taking into account each defendant’s criminal history, role in the offense, and the specifics of the violation. While the statutory maximum penalty looms, actual sentences often fall below that threshold—though still carry the weight of decades behind bars.

An indictment is not a conviction. Both Edward Jewell and Muhammad Salett are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The government bears the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial, where every detail of the case will be scrutinized under the glare of federal justice.
