CLEVELAND, OH – Bonita A. Armstead, 37, of Cleveland, is facing federal charges after allegedly ripping off the Social Security system for over $122,000, according to an indictment unsealed today. The brazen scheme involved both theft of government property and outright fraud, authorities say.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, announced that a grand jury returned a two-count indictment against Armstead, detailing the alleged theft of approximately $122,149.10 in Social Security payments. Prosecutors claim Armstead knowingly stole funds she was never entitled to receive, converting them for her own personal use.
But the alleged scheme didn’t stop there. The indictment further alleges Armstead went a step further, obtaining and illegally utilizing a second Social Security account number to continue receiving benefits – essentially doubling down on her fraudulent activity. Investigators with the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General uncovered the dual accounts during a routine audit.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Bell is leading the prosecution, promising a vigorous legal battle. While the indictment represents a significant step, it’s crucial to remember this is just the beginning. “An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt,” a DOJ spokesperson stated. “A defendant is entitled to a fair trial…”
Armstead will face a jury and the full weight of federal law. If convicted on both counts, her sentencing will be determined by the court, taking into account any prior criminal record, her role in the offense, and the specifics of the violation. However, prosecutors emphasized that the sentence will adhere to statutory maximums, and is likely to be less.
The case serves as a stark reminder that defrauding federal programs is a serious crime with significant consequences. The Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General continues to aggressively pursue those who attempt to exploit the system, ensuring that benefits reach those who legitimately require them. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops.
