Eli Alejandro Hernandez Ledezma, a 25-year-old Mexican national, attempted to smuggle approximately eight kilograms of cocaine into the US through the Eagle Pass Port of Entry in Del Rio, Texas, on March 16, 2025. Ledezma was referred to secondary inspection, where US Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the cocaine hidden in an aftermarket compartment in his vehicle. The smuggling attempt was allegedly orchestrated by an unindicted coconspirator who promised Ledezma ‘fast money’ if he had a valid visa. Ledezma shared his GPS location with the coconspirator before approaching the port of entry, further implicating himself in the crime.
The trial, presided over by US District Judge Ernest Gonzalez, revealed the extent of Ledezma’s involvement in the cocaine trafficking scheme. Testimony and evidence presented during the trial showed that Ledezma was in contact with the coconspirator, who offered him a lucrative deal in exchange for smuggling the cocaine into the US.
Ledezma was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of conspiracy to import cocaine, and one count of importation of cocaine. Each count carries a penalty of 10 years to life in federal prison and up to a $10 million fine. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
The investigation was conducted by ICE Homeland Security Investigations and US Customs and Border Protection, with assistance from Assistant US Attorneys Warsame Galaydh, Nallely Duarte, and William Golden. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations.
