Consuelo Garcia Lopez Pleads Guilty to Meth Trafficking

Consuelo Azeneth Garcia Lopez, 39, of Laredo, Texas, stood before U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden today and admitted to trafficking nearly 5 kilograms of pure methamphetamine across state lines—a crime that could land her in federal prison for life.

Lopez was pulled over on September 27, 2016, by a Gulfport police officer near mile marker 37 on Interstate 10 for a routine traffic violation. What started as a simple stop unraveled fast. When questioned, Lopez appeared exhausted, claiming she’d been driving all day. But she couldn’t name her destination—only saying she’d be told where to go once she reached Alabama.

Her story raised red flags. Records showed multiple crossings into and out of Mexico. The officer asked for consent to search the vehicle. Lopez agreed. Hidden compartments in the car yielded almost 5 kilograms of uncut meth—worth hundreds of thousands on the street.

Lopez is not a U.S. citizen but was legally present in the country at the time of her arrest. Her plea to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine was entered in federal court in Gulfport, Mississippi, marking the end of a nearly three-year investigation led by the Gulfport Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and DEA Special Agent in Charge Brad L. Byerley confirmed the plea, emphasizing the role of interagency cooperation in intercepting large-scale drug operations. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Meynardie handled the prosecution.

Sentencing is set for July 30, 2019. Garcia Lopez faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $10,000,000 fine. The case underscores the persistent flow of narcotics along interstate corridors and the federal crackdown on non-citizens used as mules in transnational drug networks.
