D.C. Crime Spikes in 2020, FBI Says

Crime rates in Washington D.C. skyrocketed in 2020, with the nation’s capital ranking among the top cities for violent crime, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The 2020 data paints a stark picture of a city grappling with rising crime, mirroring a national trend of increased violent crime.

The UCR program, a long-standing partnership between local law enforcement agencies and the FBI, collects and analyzes crime data from law enforcement agencies across the country. In 2020, cities like Washington D.C. saw a significant spike in violent crime, including murders, aggravated assaults, and robberies. This trend was not unique to D.C. – cities across the country experienced a surge in violent crime during this period.

Nationally, the FBI reported a 5.6% increase in violent crime in 2020, with property crimes also on the rise. The increase in violent crime was driven in part by a rise in homicide rates, which saw a 30% jump in 2020 compared to the previous year. This trend was particularly pronounced in cities with large Black populations, where homicide rates were significantly higher than the national average.

Washington D.C. was no exception to this trend. According to the UCR data, the city saw a significant increase in violent crime, with homicide rates more than doubling in some neighborhoods. The surge in violent crime was attributed in part to a rise in gang activity and the proliferation of firearms in the city.
