A Dallas man with a history of domestic violence has been locked up for 70 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm, announced Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy E. Larson.
Thomas Keithlun Brown, 26, of Dallas, pled guilty to the federal offense of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in September 2024. He was sentenced on June 18, 2025, to 70 months in federal prison by United States District Judge Ed Kinkeade.
Brown’s guilty plea came after prosecutors argued that the defendant’s extensive history of assaulting women and domestic violence convictions warranted a lengthy sentence.
This case is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas’s Domestic Violence Initiative, aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers by using the tools of federal prosecution.
History shows that gun violence and domestic violence are intertwined, and that offenders with domestic violence in their past pose a remarkably high risk of homicide.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Denton Police Department conducted the investigation, while Assistant United States Attorneys John Boyle and Luis Suarez prosecuted the case.
Brown’s sentence sends a strong message that those who commit domestic violence and then possess firearms will be held accountable for their actions, said Larson.
The Domestic Violence Initiative is a critical tool in keeping our communities safe from the devastating impact of domestic violence and gun violence.
