Davenport Man Jones Gets 33 Months for Gun Crimes

Davenport man DeAries Napoleon Jones, 28, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 33 months for two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, handed down February 17, 2017, by Senior U.S. District Judge James E. Gritzner, marks the end of a violent trail that began with shots fired and ended with loaded guns pulled from a car and a waistband.

The first incident unfolded March 7, 2016, when Davenport Police responded to a shots-fired call. Officers traced involvement to a vehicle registered to Jones. A search warrant led them to three spent shell casings inside the car. But the real firepower came during a search of his residence: a Ruger P95 9mm handgun, 48 rounds of live ammunition, and a stash of marijuana were seized in plain view.

Months later, on July 11, 2016, Jones surfaced again during an unrelated Davenport Police investigation. This time, officers found a loaded Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun tucked in his waistband. No shots were fired that day—but the discovery added a second federal gun charge to his growing record.

Convicted on both counts, Jones now faces 33 months behind bars followed by three years of supervised release. As a previously convicted felon, federal law strictly prohibits him from possessing any firearms—a rule he broke twice in less than five months.

The case was a joint push by the Davenport Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Prosecuted by U.S. Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel’s office, it was prioritized under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative targeting repeat violent offenders and illegal gun possession.
