Denny Gets 8 Months for Brutal Assault

GREAT FALLS, MT – Larry Ray Denny, Jr., 46, of Box Elder, Montana, will spend the next eight months behind bars after being sentenced Wednesday for a vicious assault on his domestic partner. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris, reflects a pattern of violent behavior, as Denny is a habitual offender.

The October 15, 2017 attack took place on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. Court records detail a brutal beating, with the victim reporting Denny physically struck her, leaving visible injuries. Law enforcement responding to the scene observed significant swelling around her eye, blood on her forehead, and distinct red marks covering her neck – a clear indication of the force used.

This wasn’t Denny’s first run-in with the law regarding domestic violence. He previously had two convictions for the same crime, a fact weighed heavily by Judge Morris during sentencing. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cassady Adams and Ryan Weldon, successfully argued for a substantial prison term given Denny’s history.

The eight-month incarceration is just the beginning of Denny’s accountability. Following his release, he will be subject to three years of supervised release, where his movements and activities will be monitored by federal probation officers. This oversight aims to prevent further violence and protect potential future victims.

The case was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Chippewa Cree Law Enforcement, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in addressing violent crime in tribal lands. The investigation meticulously gathered evidence that ultimately led to Denny’s guilty plea in January to the charge of domestic assault by habitual offender.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the justice system’s response to domestic violence, especially in vulnerable communities like the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. The cycle of abuse must be broken, and holding repeat offenders like Denny accountable is a crucial step.
