Andrew Dion, a 57-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution Lewisburg (FCI Lewisburg) in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of weapons in prison.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Dion was indicted on July 24, 2025, by a federal grand jury on two counts of possessing contraband in prison and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.
The indictment alleges that on June 2, 2025, Dion used a broken, wooden broom handle, approximately 13 inches in length, to assault another inmate. Additionally, Dion was found to be in possession of a bent brush with exposed metal prongs, approximately 8 inches in length.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Zenzinger is prosecuting the case.
The maximum penalty under federal law for these offenses is 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine. A sentence would also include a period of supervised release following imprisonment. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
It is essential to note that indictments are only allegations. All persons charged by indictment are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court. As the case against Andrew Dion progresses, the public will be watching to see how the justice system handles this violent crime committed within the prison walls.
The incident highlights the ongoing concerns about prison safety and the presence of contraband within correctional facilities. The Federal Correctional Institution Lewisburg, where Dion is an inmate, has a history of violence and discipline issues, and this recent indictment is a reminder of the challenges faced by prison authorities in maintaining order and security.
