Donnell Russell Charged in Threat Call to Block R. Kelly Doc Screening

Donnell Russell, 45, of Chicago, Illinois, is facing federal charges for allegedly placing a threatening phone call to a Manhattan theater in a bid to shut down a screening of the explosive docuseries ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ on December 4, 2018. Russell, who was then-manager for the embattled R&B singer, is charged with one count of conspiracy to threaten physical harm by interstate communication and one count of threatening physical harm by interstate communication—each carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say Russell, operating from Chicago, coordinated a multi-pronged campaign to block the screening at NeueHouse, a Manhattan venue set to host the event that included several of R. Kelly’s alleged victims. After sending a cease-and-desist letter to the theater—which failed—Russell allegedly contacted law enforcement agencies near the venue in an attempt to disrupt the event. When those efforts fell short, prosecutors say he escalated to outright terror.

According to the complaint unsealed in Manhattan federal court, Russell made a direct threat to a NeueHouse employee using a landline tied to his Chicago home. In the call, he claimed a gunman was inside the theater, ready to ‘shoot up’ the screening. The employee immediately called 911. NeueHouse staff evacuated the building and canceled the event, halting a public reckoning that had already drawn national attention.

Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss didn’t mince words: ‘As alleged, Donnell Russell used threats of violence to stop a screening of a docuseries devoted to exploring allegations of sexual abuse against women and minor girls by the recording artist R. Kelly.’ She emphasized that such threats—especially those aimed at silencing abuse survivors—are not only illegal but morally repugnant. ‘We are committed to aggressively investigating and prosecuting such crimes.’

FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. condemned the attempt to weaponize fear. ‘It defies logic that a threat like the one alleged here could stop victims from speaking about their alleged abuse,’ he said. ‘The violence Mr. Russell allegedly threatened succeeded in shutting down one airing of the documentary, but he was unable to silence the women featured in the film.’

Russell is expected to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang in Manhattan federal court. The case underscores the lengths to which enablers allegedly went to shield R. Kelly from accountability—even as survivors fought to be heard. The docuseries went on to air nationally, but the chilling attempt to bury it with threats of bloodshed remains a stark chapter in the saga.
