Durant Man Admits Weapon Assault on Choctaw Land

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – A Durant man is facing a decade behind bars after admitting to a brutal assault on Choctaw Nation land. Derek Michael James, 41, entered a guilty plea today to one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

The feds say James attacked the victim on January 27, 2025, wielding a dangerous weapon and clearly intending to cause serious harm. The incident unfolded in Bryan County, squarely within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation Reservation. Details of the weapon used and the extent of the victim’s injuries have not been released, but the charge carries a hefty penalty.

If convicted, James is looking at up to ten years in the federal penitentiary, along with a potential fine of $250,000.00. This wasn’t some backwoods brawl; the investigation was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working alongside the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department, signaling the seriousness with which authorities are treating crimes on tribal lands.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson accepted the plea and has ordered a full presentence investigation report. This report will delve into James’s background, criminal history (if any), and other relevant factors to help a U.S. District Court Judge determine the appropriate sentence. Expect a detailed accounting before the final gavel falls.

James isn’t going home anytime soon. He remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, cooling his heels while awaiting sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan E. Soverly and Patrick M. Flanigan are prosecuting the case, ensuring that justice is served in this violent encounter.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. The Eastern District of Oklahoma has seen a rise in cases involving crimes committed within Indian Country, highlighting the ongoing need for cooperation between federal and tribal law enforcement to maintain order and protect residents.
