ROCHESTER, NY – Eric Davis, 32, is dead after a violent confrontation with Rochester Police Department (RPD) officers on December 19, 2025. New body-worn camera footage released today by New York Attorney General Letitia James paints a chaotic picture of a night that left four people injured and Davis dead at the scene.
The incident began at approximately 10:23 p.m. when RPD officers responded to a 911 call reporting a possible break-in at a Rochester residence. Upon arrival, officers encountered Davis standing beside the house. According to the released footage, officers immediately ordered Davis to show his hands. Instead, Davis allegedly opened fire, striking two officers before fleeing on foot.
The pursuit led officers several blocks away where a third officer encountered Davis. Again, Davis allegedly fired a weapon, hitting the officer before being engaged with return fire. A fourth officer arrived on scene and, following verbal commands, also discharged their weapon at Davis, who was struck by gunfire. Despite immediate attempts at medical intervention, Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered near his body.
Three RPD officers and one civilian sustained injuries during the exchange. All four individuals were hospitalized and have since been discharged, according to the Attorney General’s office. The footage released today comes from the body-worn cameras of all four officers involved in the incident. Attorney General James stated the release is in line with her commitment to transparency and building public trust in investigations conducted by her Office of Special Investigation (OSI).
The OSI is mandated under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b to assess all incidents where a law enforcement officer may have caused the death of another person, regardless of circumstances. The investigation is ongoing, and the release of the footage is not a determination of guilt or innocence, nor does it indicate whether criminal charges will be filed. The Attorney General’s office has made clear that this is simply a release of evidence gathered during the investigation.
