Ex-Southwest Baggage Handler Gets 6 Months for Gun Theft

ST. LOUIS, MO – Mark Hunter of St. Louis is headed to federal prison after admitting to pilfering firearms from checked luggage while employed as a baggage handler for Southwest Airlines. U.S. District Court Judge Stephen R. Clark sentenced Hunter to six months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty to knowingly possessing or receiving stolen firearms.

The case unraveled on September 25, 2020, when the Manchester Police Department recovered a stolen pistol. The weapon had been reported missing by a Southwest Airlines passenger traveling through St. Louis Lambert Airport, who claimed it was lifted from their checked baggage. This initial recovery sparked a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Investigators quickly discovered a pattern. Between March 28, 2020, and August 22, 2020, a total of seven firearms were reported stolen from luggage checked on Southwest flights routing through Lambert Airport. The scope of the thefts raised red flags, and investigators began scrutinizing airport personnel with access to baggage handling.

The investigation zeroed in on Hunter, a Southwest Airlines baggage handler. A review of scheduling records and the dates of the reported thefts revealed a disturbing correlation: Hunter was on duty and had access to the baggage containing the stolen firearms. When confronted by federal agents, Hunter confessed to stealing five guns from passenger luggage during his time as a baggage handler at the St. Louis airport.

Federal prosecutors presented evidence linking Hunter to the thefts, leading to the guilty plea. While the full extent of Hunter’s scheme remains unclear, the sentencing sends a clear message that exploiting a position of trust to steal firearms will not be tolerated. The brazen nature of the crime – stealing guns directly from traveling passengers – adds another layer of severity to the case.

The successful investigation was a collaborative effort between the Manchester Police Department, the ATF, and the TSA. Authorities have not released details on whether any of the stolen firearms were connected to other crimes. This case serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities within airport security and the need for continued vigilance in protecting passenger belongings and preventing the flow of illegal weapons.
