Fake Spy Robert Earhart Jr. Jailed After CIA Ruse

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Robert Earhart Jr., 38, of Columbus, Georgia, is cooling his heels in federal custody after a brazen attempt to impersonate a CIA agent unraveled, according to court documents unsealed today. Earhart Jr. faces a single count of false personation of an officer or employee of the United States, a charge that carries a potential three-year prison sentence and a hefty $250,000 fine.

The scheme came to light when Earhart Jr. allegedly left a voicemail for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Columbus on January 11th, claiming to be a CIA agent within the “protective operations division” with top-level security clearance. He requested a meeting with U.S. Attorney Peter Leary. The feds weren’t buying it. But this wasn’t Earhart Jr.’s first rodeo with deception.

Investigators revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior. Earhart Jr. is also accused of posing as a Homeland Security agent. More damningly, court proceedings show he previously attempted to use the same tactic – claiming to be a DEA agent – to spring three inmates from the Muscogee County jail back in May 2019. That attempt failed, but it establishes a clear history of deliberately misleading law enforcement.

Federal agents caught up with Earhart Jr. on February 8th at the U.S. Courthouse in Columbus. Following an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Stephen Hyles, the judge ordered him detained, citing the potential flight risk and the seriousness of the charges. He’s now facing the consequences of his repeated attempts to deceive federal authorities.

The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI, with crucial support from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Helmick is prosecuting the case, and she’s building a case based on a clear pattern of fraudulent behavior.

It’s important to remember that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Earhart Jr. is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, his history suggests a calculated effort to exploit the authority of federal agencies, and the feds are determined to see this case through.
