The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida recently hosted its inaugural Federal Prosecutor Leadership Academy, a two-day program designed to introduce high school students to the mission and work of the Department of Justice. The academy, which took place in Miami, brought together 33 students from 10 high schools across Miami-Dade County. The program aimed to inspire the next generation of public servants by providing access and mentorship to federal prosecutors, law enforcement agents, and members of the judiciary.
Throughout the program, students engaged directly with federal prosecutors, law enforcement agents, and members of the judiciary to gain a comprehensive understanding of the federal criminal justice system. They participated in interactive panels and presentations led by Assistant US Attorneys and federal law enforcement partners, including representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Secret Service, and the City of Doral Police Department.
US Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida emphasized the importance of early access and mentorship in shaping the trajectory of a student’s life. He noted that for many of the students, this was their first real interaction with federal prosecutors, law enforcement agents, and judges, and that this kind of exposure can help build the next generation of public servants.
The programming included an introduction to the Department of Justice and the structure of the US Attorney’s Office, as well as roundtable discussions with Assistant US Attorneys from various sections. The goal of the academy is to inspire and educate high school students about the possibilities of a career in public service.
