Felon Darnell Melton Sentenced for Firearm Possession in New Orleans

New Orleans, LA – A 27-year-old New Orleans man has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a serious federal crime that puts communities at risk.

Darnell Melton, age 27, was sentenced on April 23, 2024 by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey after previously pleading guilty to the charge

The FBI executed a search warrant at Melton’s shared residence on March 28, 2023, finding two AR-15 pistols and three handguns in the attic. Melton possessed one of the handguns, a Glock Model 27 Gen4, .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Melton’s prior felony convictions include simple robbery, simple burglary, and attempted possession of a firearm by a felon. His actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a willingness to pose a threat to public safety.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and the community. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Berman.

Melton’s sentence serves as a reminder that federal authorities will continue to crack down on individuals who violate federal firearms laws and put communities at risk. The 51-month prison term, followed by three years of supervised release and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100, is a fitting punishment for Melton’s crimes.
