WASHINGTON D.C. – A D.C. man is facing serious time after a jury found him guilty yesterday on multiple federal charges related to a drug and gun bust. Derrick Thomas Martin, 33, tossed a backpack packed with a loaded handgun and a mountain of narcotics out of his apartment window when cops came calling last November.

The bust went down November 25th, 2024, at an apartment on Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Unit were there to serve an outstanding warrant from Maryland – Martin had skipped out on a trial for prior gun and drug charges. Instead of surrendering, Martin chucked a black backpack from the window.

Cops quickly secured the bag, discovering a loaded Century Arms Micro Draco – a compact, AK-47 style pistol – along with roughly 700 grams of cocaine and over 5,700 fentanyl pills. Inside the apartment, authorities found a child sleeping near the stash. According to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, Martin has a lengthy rap sheet with 31 prior arrests.

The jury needed less than a day to convict Martin on charges of possessing fentanyl and cocaine with intent to distribute, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm during drug trafficking. He’s due back in court July 10, 2026, and faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars. Pirro stated Martin “posed a clear danger to our community.”
