A South Florida health department supervisor took a bribe on the job — and now he’s paying the price behind bars. Johnson, 58, of Tamarac, was sentenced to five months in federal prison after pleading guilty to extortion under color of official right, a felony charge stemming from his abuse of power at the Broward County Florida Department of Health office.
The crime unfolded on June 22, 2015, while Johnson was working as a supervisor at the Fort Lauderdale location. Two home builders walked into the office seeking permits for sewage and water systems. Instead of going through official channels, they handed Johnson $500 in cash — a payoff for faster action. He accepted it without hesitation, turning his badge of public service into a tool for personal gain.
Johnson didn’t just break the law — he betrayed the public trust. His role required strict adherence to health and safety protocols, yet he chose to auction off his authority to the highest bidder, even if that bid was just five Benjamins. Federal prosecutors didn’t look kindly on the scheme, and neither did U.S. District Judge Daniel T. K. Hurley, who handed down the sentence yesterday.
Wifredo A. Ferrer, then-U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, emphasized that corruption at any level of government will be met with federal force. “This was not a permit shortcut,” Ferrer said. “This was a criminal act — plain and simple.” The FBI’s Miami Field Office, led by Special Agent in Charge George Piro, conducted the investigation that exposed the pay-to-play scheme.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey N. Kaplan prosecuted the case, building a straightforward but damning record that led to Johnson’s guilty plea. No elaborate conspiracy was needed — just a paper trail, witness statements, and the cold fact that Johnson took money for official acts. The evidence was undeniable, and the fallout, inevitable.
Court documents related to the case are available through the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida at http://www.flsd.uscourts.gov or http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov. Johnson’s name now joins the roster of public officials who traded integrity for cash — and lost everything in the deal.
