Fort Dodge Arsonist Gets 10 Years for Insurance Scam

FORT DODGE, IA – Shirley Weimer, 67, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, learned her fate on November 25, 2014, when she was sentenced to 120 months – 10 years – in federal prison for her role in a brazen insurance fraud scheme involving arson. Weimer conspired to torch a rental property and then pocketed $78,593.25 from the resulting bogus insurance claim.

The scheme, laid bare in court, revealed a calculated attempt to profit from destruction. Weimer allegedly hired tenant Lisa Young to burn down the residence Young was renting. Young, in turn, roped in her adult children and ex-husband, creating a multi-person conspiracy. An initial attempt failed, but the group persisted, successfully igniting the property and putting first responders, neighbors, and insurance adjusters in harm’s way.

U.S. District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett, presiding over the case in Sioux City, didn’t mince words when handing down the sentence. Beyond the decade-long imprisonment, Weimer was slapped with a $100 special assessment and ordered to repay State Farm Insurance a total of $78,593.25, plus accrued interest. Following her release, she’ll face a three-year term of supervised release – a formality in the federal system, as parole is non-existent.

Weimer wasn’t the only one facing consequences for this reckless act. Ashley Straight and Gerald Straight each received 13-month prison sentences for their involvement, while Lisa Young was sentenced to 7 months behind bars. The investigation, a joint effort, involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Iowa Department of Public Safety (including the State Fire Marshal and Department of Criminal Investigation), the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Dodge Police Department, and investigators from State Farm’s Special Investigation Unit.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case, meticulously building a case based on evidence gathered from multiple agencies. Weimer is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals, awaiting transport to a designated federal prison facility. The case file, number 13-3035, is publicly accessible through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system: https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.

This case serves as a stark reminder that attempts to defraud insurance companies through arson will be met with swift and severe justice. The risk to human life and the financial burden placed on legitimate policyholders are not taken lightly by federal authorities.
