Four deported Mexican nationals have been indicted in Raleigh on federal charges of illegal reentry, bringing renewed scrutiny to immigration enforcement in Eastern North Carolina. Among them is Luis Miguel Curiel-Acuna, 34, who faces up to twenty years in prison due to a prior conviction for conspiracy to deliver cocaine—a charge that escalates his case under federal sentencing guidelines.
The other defendants—Jose Manuel Cardona-Rodriguez, 31; Homero Sierra-Villa, 47; and Ignacio Ventura-Mendoza, 33—are each charged with Illegal Reentry of a Deported Alien, a felony carrying a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release. All four were formally charged following a federal grand jury indictment returned in Raleigh.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Curiel-Acuna was previously removed from the United States after being convicted of an aggravated felony, a fact that significantly increases his potential prison time if found guilty. Federal prosecutors emphasize that prior criminal history directly impacts sentencing in immigration cases, particularly when tied to drug-related offenses.
John Stuart Bruce, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, confirmed the indictments but reiterated that the charges are accusations only. “The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law,” Bruce stated. No trial date has been set.
The investigation was led by the Department of Homeland Security, specifically Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO). Agents have been tracking patterns of illegal reentry in the region, often tied to prior deportations and criminal histories, as part of broader federal enforcement operations.
The case underscores the federal government’s continued focus on prosecuting deported individuals who return to the U.S. illegally—especially those with violent or drug-related records. Court records show rising numbers of such prosecutions in North Carolina, reflecting a tightened stance on immigration violations within the Eastern District.
