Goose Creek Man Indicted: Lied About ISIS Ties

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ala Aldeen Alshaikh, 31, of Goose Creek, is facing serious federal charges after a grand jury returned a four-count indictment alleging he deliberately misled authorities about his connections to the terrorist organization ISIS. Alshaikh was taken into custody this morning, marking a significant escalation in a case that raises serious national security concerns.

The indictment details a pattern of deception. Alshaikh, a Sudanese national, allegedly lied repeatedly during his application for U.S. citizenship in September 2021. During an interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, he claimed no association with any terrorist group. However, prosecutors say just a month prior, in August 2021, Alshaikh pledged allegiance to and claimed membership in ISIS. This initial falsehood was compounded by a second denial on a written immigration form a year later, as he prepared for his naturalization ceremony.

But the lies didn’t stop there. The indictment further alleges that Alshaikh made online statements in October and November 2021 – after his initial immigration interview – suggesting involvement with ISIS and discussing a potential attack on a United States Embassy. These digital footprints directly contradict his sworn statements and paint a disturbing picture of a man actively engaged with extremist ideology. The FBI’s Columbia Joint Terrorism Task Force has been meticulously building this case, piecing together evidence from multiple sources.

Adding another layer of complexity, Alshaikh, who has a background in aviation, is accused of lying to an FBI agent in January 2025. He allegedly denied offering his expertise to any militant group, despite having previously offered to share his aviation skills with the Al-Bara Ibn Malik Brigade. This revelation raises questions about potential operational capabilities and intent. To further obstruct the investigation, Alshaikh is also charged with destroying evidence related to these online conversations after learning he was under federal scrutiny.

If convicted on all counts, Alshaikh faces a lengthy prison sentence, with maximum penalties ranging from five to 20 years imprisonment. He was arraigned this morning, and a detention hearing is scheduled for September 19 at 10 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Gordon Baker. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Chris Lietzow and Everett McMillian are leading the prosecution, bolstered by Trial Attorney Kevin C. Nunnally of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, Counterterrorism Section.

It’s crucial to remember that these are allegations at this stage. Alshaikh is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, the gravity of the charges – and the potential implications for national security – are undeniable. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case closely and provide updates as they become available.
