Trucker Gets Life for Interstate Child Sex Abuse

Grand Junction, CO – Michael Tracy McFadden, 51, will spend the rest of his life in federal prison after being convicted of horrific crimes against two children. The long-haul trucker used his profession as a cover for years of abuse, transporting the victims across state lines to commit unspeakable acts. The case, riddled with legal complications, finally reached a conclusion on March 6, 2023, when Judge Christine M. Arguello handed down the life sentence.

For at least six years, McFadden systematically abused the victims, both in his Grand Junction home and within the confines of his semi-truck while traveling. The abuse wasn’t a one-time act; it was a sustained pattern of predation. The victims, displaying remarkable courage, took the stand and detailed the repeated assaults, providing crucial testimony that ultimately sealed McFadden’s fate. Their bravery ensured this predator will not harm another child.

This wasn’t McFadden’s first brush with the law. He’d previously been convicted in state court on charges of sexually assaulting six separate children. However, those convictions were tossed out on a technicality – a speedy trial violation. That legal maneuver, while allowing McFadden a temporary reprieve, inadvertently opened the door for federal prosecutors to step in. The feds quickly determined the interstate nature of the crimes, and the fact that he used commercial transportation, qualified the case for federal jurisdiction.

The FBI Denver Division launched a full-scale investigation, collaborating with the Grand Junction Police Department and the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Evidence quickly mounted, confirming the scope and depravity of McFadden’s actions. A federal grand jury returned an indictment, and McFadden was rearrested on federal charges of crossing state lines with the intent to commit sexual acts with a minor and transporting a minor with the intent to engage in sexual activity. These charges carried the potential for a life sentence, and the feds intended to secure it.

“This predator exploited his position and used the highways as hunting grounds,” stated United States Attorney Cole Finegan. “The victims have shown incredible strength, and we are committed to supporting them throughout their healing process.” FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek added, “This case underscores the FBI’s dedication to protecting the most vulnerable among us. We will relentlessly pursue those who prey on children, regardless of where they hide.” The case was also supported by Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual abuse.

McFadden’s sentencing sends a clear message: those who commit these heinous crimes will face severe consequences. While no sentence can fully repair the damage inflicted upon the victims, it ensures McFadden will never again be a threat to any community. Case Number: 19-CR-243.
