SOUTHAVEN, MS – Lacyrus Green, 27, of Aberdeen, Mississippi, will spend the next seven years and eleven months behind bars for a brazen carjacking that unfolded in the Walmart parking lot in Southaven on September 16, 2024. Green held a couple hostage with what appeared to be a deadly weapon, then made off with their vehicle.
According to court documents, Green met the victims intending to test drive a car they had listed for sale. The test drive concluded, and upon their return, Green pulled a BB gun – convincingly disguised as an AR-style pistol – and leveled it at the pair. He reportedly threatened to kill them before snatching the car keys and speeding away in their vehicle.
The escape was short-lived. Green was apprehended by authorities in Memphis, Tennessee. Senior Judge Sharion Aycock delivered the sentence today: 95 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. U.S. Marshals immediately took Green into custody following the sentencing hearing. The incident underscores the growing threat of violent crime even in seemingly mundane transactions.
“This office is committed to the fairly straightforward principle that violent criminals such as this defendant should go to prison,” stated U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner. “We will continue, alongside our law enforcement partners, with our commitment to protect victims from those who would threaten them with harm.” The statement highlights the Justice Department’s zero tolerance approach to armed robbery and carjacking.
“Lacyrus Green’s vicious crime endangered lives and created fear amongst the community,” added Robert Eikhoff, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Jackson Field Office. “The brazen act of brandishing a gun and carjacking unsuspecting sellers will not be tolerated. Collaborative teamwork between the FBI, the US Attorney’s Office, the Southaven Police Department, and the Memphis Police Department sends a clear message that law enforcement will relentlessly pursue violent offenders, restoring safety and security to our communities.”
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI, the Southaven Police Department, and the Memphis Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Mims successfully prosecuted the case, securing a substantial prison sentence for Green. This case serves as a stark warning: those who resort to violence during criminal activity will face severe consequences under federal law.
