Guatemalan Reentered US After Deportation, Sentenced

PROVIDENCE – In a swift move against immigration violations, Rigoberto Cano Perez, a 28-year-old Guatemalan national, has been sentenced for illegal reentry into the United States after being deported. The sentence follows his arrest and conviction in Rhode Island state court on charges of simple assault and/or battery and disorderly conduct.

Cano Perez, who was removed from the U.S. by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 20, 2024, brazenly reentered the country and was apprehended once more for violating a domestic no contact order and facing charges of domestic disorderly conduct on May 11, 2025.

Today, in federal court, U.S. District Court Judge Melissa R. DuBose sentenced Cano Perez to time served. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against him.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Taylor A. Dean and Peter I. Roklan, with the investigation being handled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This sentence is a result of Operation Take Back America, a broad Department of Justice initiative targeting illegal immigration and criminal organizations.

Operation Take Back America mobilizes resources from OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood to streamline efforts against violent crime and protect communities across the nation.

Rigoberto Cano Perez’s illegal reentry into the United States serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against immigration violations, and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to uphold the country’s borders.
