Hermosa Woman Fails to Report Inmate Escape
A disturbing incident in South Dakota has come to light, as a 48-year-old Hermosa woman has pleaded guilty to a felony charge. Doreen Amiotte, age 48, of Hermosa, South Dakota was arraigned in U.S. District Court on June 12, 2013, and entered a guilty plea to Misprision of Felony.
The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on November 26, 2012, when a federal inmate on funeral furlough went AWOL. The inmate escaped between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., but Amiotte, who was aware of the inmate’s absence, failed to report the escape until after 4:30 p.m.
This egregious failure to act has serious consequences. Under the law, the maximum penalty upon conviction is 3 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 1 year of supervised release; and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Marshals Service, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers. A presentence investigation has been ordered, with a sentencing date set for September 9, 2013. Amiotte was released pending sentencing.
It is essential to note that the 48-year-old Hermosa woman’s actions have put her in a precarious position, and it remains to be seen what the full extent of her punishment will be. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and the consequences of failing to act in the face of wrongdoing.
A full investigation into this matter is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
