In a chilling reminder of the dangers that lurk on America’s roads, a staggering 22,600 people have lost their lives on public thoroughfares since January 1 last year, with a further 678,000 injured in the process. The grim statistics were compiled by safety experts attending a conference in Washington, highlighting the devastating impact of highway accidents on the nation’s citizens. With a population of over 110 million, this means that roughly one out of every 17 people in the land has fallen victim to the automobile or another vehicle in the past 11 months.
